Selling Is Self Care

I started a conversation about selling and how important it is to make time to sell in a previous blog, by which I mean take time to learn your craft, to fail, to build expertise.

From that place, you can sell anything, and you can sell it with joy in your heart.

I want to follow that point up to go a bit deeper and make the point that selling is an act of supreme self care.

Sales Is Storytelling

How?

Think about it.

Sales is storytelling.

You get to tell a story every time you sell something,

Your story, the story of the thing you’re selling, a story that connects to your buyer.

Stories are what make us human.

We love sharing our stories, and we love hearing stories.

We communicate through stories.

Every time you get to tell a story, you embrace both your humanity and your connection to all other humans. So basically you are connecting to something higher than just you.

And that is self care.

We Are All Always Selling

Thus, if we’re always telling stories, and we are, then we are all also always selling.

Teachers are selling to their students. They are selling information, a way of life, a way of thinking.

Doctors are selling to their patients. They are selling the benefits of a drug or procedure or a way of living.

Lawyers are selling to their clients and to judges and juries. They are selling guilt or innocence and the details involved.

Except for labor or emergency services, most of our professional work involves some sort of storytelling, or selling. And even they end up having to sell in some form, for promotions, raises, benefits, days off, etc.

And in everyday life we sell.

We persuade others to believe what happened to us, to give us what we want, or even to let us help them.

Selling.

Selling Is Self Care

So? You are still wondering how selling is self care.

Well, when it comes down to it, the best thing you can do for yourself every day is be true to yourself, which is how you are true to your higher power.

Be fully yourself.

You do that by telling your story.

Your real, authentic story.

When you get really good at telling your story, you will find out where your path in this life is.

You don’t have to tell everyone you meet. You can share only with those closest to you. You can journal.

And once you do that, you will find the fun of selling whatever it is you sell in your profession. You will find joy in everyday life. You will find your self.

I cannot tell you how much fun I have selling homes to people, telling the story of the house, of the neighborhood.

How much fun I have selling our new recruits on the beauty of our business.

How much fun I have being sold on new information in my field or in varying interests I have in life.

How much fun I have listening to the stories of new clients.
