Mothers Make It Better

As we step into the new year with new hopes, new dreams, new goals, and new aspirations, I wanted to stop to take a moment to acknowledge the power of mothers. I am sure you will see another post from us come mother’s day, but Sioux Falls has been dealing with numerous storms and snow dumps, and as I have watched my wife mother our children through snow days and cabin fever, I think it is more imperative now than ever to honor the role mother make in all of our lives. Mothers make everything better.

I grew up the son of a single mother who worked hard to make our lives full and rich. I watched my mom kill it both at work and at home to ensure her children had everything we needed, from food on the table and a roof over our heads to uniforms and equipment for sports and extracurriculars. She taught us to be wise, to have grit, and to be kind, which is not always a guaranteed combination of traits and qualities.

Life can embitter us if we let it, and my mother never let life embitter her, and she certainly never allowed space for us to become bitter or resentful at any difficult hand we were dealt.

I married a woman with those same qualities - love in her heart, a commitment to God, and the ability to be firm with our kids when necessary, and soft when essential.

As a father, of course I recognize the strength and integrity it takes to be a good dad - to provide, to hold fast and be true, to never back down in the face of a bully. It is no easy feat to be a man who is also a father in this world.

But to be a mother has always been and will always be one of the most challenging roles across society. And to do it with grace is even more awesome, truly something I am in awe of.

I watch the mothers in my life take on professional roles, killing it at work, manage their households, budgeting, shopping, planning meals, planning events, scheduling everyone’s lives, taking phone calls, making appointments, healing our young, and so often pushing through their own illnesses and exhaustion with smiles on their faces.

Did you hear about the recent study that shows that women need 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night in order to have a truly great day? Because the hormone they produce that regulates the necessary centers of calm and peace they must produce while they sleep. Men produce that hormone all day long, so we can actually thrive on 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

Now, what woman do you know who sleeps at least, at least, 8 hours per night?

I don’t think I know a single one!

And still, they thrive.

I watch my wife smile through our children’s battles, have patience during that 5 o’clock insanity we all experience right before dinner time, and nurture when the occasion calls for it, no matter how tired she is.

Now, you might be thinking, “what does this have to do with real estate? Why am I reading about mothers on a real estate blog?”

As the leader of a real estate team in my community always watching for changes and trends so I can be sure my team is meeting the community’s needs as they relate to real estate, the thing that has stood out to me most lately is how hard life can be on mothers when they don’t have the space they need.

I have talked to countless mothers who need one more room, a little bit more square footage, a bigger kitchen, a play area, and more.

And they hold their tongues and make do with what they have, not wanting to make the big change of selling their current home to move to a bigger one unless absolutely necessary.

So I am here today, in this second month of the new year to say, now is your time, mothers.

And fathers, listen up, let’s do this for the women in our lives.

Let this be the start to a great year. Put your too small house on the market and get the bigger space you need to truly thrive.

So your family can spread out, so mothers can feel more relaxed in an organized space, so fathers can feel good about supporting their families’ needs.

Mothers truly do make everything better, and this is the year to make everything better for moms.

“Happy wife, happy life” is not just a silly expression men toss around.

A happy, rested, peaceful mother with space to think, to move, to feel, to breathe, truly does create a happy, restful, peaceful environment for the whole family.

If you have been on the fence about upgrading your home, see this as your sign to take action now.

Let’s make this year great together.
